“Neutral animal prints in classic colourways can add a touch of understated elegance,” suggests Antonina Depczynski, designer at Loomah Bespoke Carpets and Rugs. For a modern take, look no further than Mara, Loomah’s reimagining of the classic leopard print. A graphic interpretation of one of the animal kingdom’s most iconic patterns, Mara features a more abstract reworking of the traditional leopard spot.
Mara is hand tufted in pure New Zealand semi-worsted wool to accentuate the detail of each individual leopard spot. A smooth cut pile finish creates an almost velvet like feel that is wonderfully soft underfoot whilst showcasing this bold pattern to full effect.
Effortlessly cool and a firm favourite amongst Loomah’s design team, leopard print adds an air of confidence to any interior. “For full-on maximalism, pair with other patterns and prints for an eclectic finish,” suggests Antonina. “Or incorporate as a statement rug to elevate a more minimalist décor with an injection of understated glamour.
However, animal print isn’t just for the maximalists amongst us and can easily be toned down for a subtle, more sophisticated look.
The living room of this luxury apartment designed by Goodard Littlefair features a bespoke hand tufted rug inspired by the classic crocodile print. The lines have been hand drawn by Antonia to give an organic feel to this pared back interpretation of an iconic motif. The combination of the dappled markings and neutral colour palette is not too dissimilar to shagreen, a material rich in texture that comes from natural hide.
Similarly, this luxurious master bedroom features a custom made rug in a simplified leopard print design. This sophisticated interpretation of an iconic pattern is elevated by the single colourway whilst the natural lustre of the smooth cut pile and contrasting loop adds texture and depth.
