Introducing Pembroke, a traditional design inspired by William Morris, the father-figure of the Arts and Crafts movement.
William Morris (1834-1896) was a designer, artist, writer, philosopher and political theorist. He was one of the most influential designers of the Arts and Crafts movement and had a great impact on 20th century design. Morris abhorred machine-woven carpets and ardently pursued the art of making hand knotted carpets using natural dyes. He most admired what is now considered to be the best Persian rugs of the sixteen and seventeen centuries, and reinterpreted the distinctive large-scale patterns in many of his hand knotted Hammersmith carpets.
A highly decorative, stylised design, Pembroke incorporates elements inspired by an original Persian rug that Morris hung on the wall of his dining room in Kelmscott House, his Hammersmith residence. The overarching style of Arts and Crafts design is influenced by nature, with Morris advocating the use of familiar English field and garden flowers and foliage over more exotic plants prevalent in the original Persian designs.
Pembroke features interlaced stems and stylised blossoms to create an intricate, symmetrical design framed by a decorative border of leafy trails, tulips and wildflowers. Richly coloured in a palette of verdant greens and crimson, inspired by nature and the natural dyes that were favoured by Morris. This lush colourway adds sophistication and a connection to nature to any interiormm. The background has been tufted using a striae technique where two tones are tufted at random instead of using one flat colour. This helps create a softer and aged feel.
Pembroke captivates the essence of William Morris’ distinctive style
Pembroke is hand tufted by highly skilled artisans from semi-worsted wool yarn in a loop pile finish called Petit point. “We highly recommend our wool Petit point quality for historical replications,” adds Andrew Cotgrove, Founder and Managing Director of Loomah Bespoke Carpets and Rugg. This low, tight loop pile allows for maximum design definition whilst remaining durable. The addition of tip shearing, a technique where a percentage of the loops are randomly sheared across the surface by hand, results in a more antique finish in keeping with the Persian influence.
Whilst William Morris, like many of his peers at the time, believed that carpet patterns “should lie absolutely flat upon the ground,” we have incorporated an element of higher cut pile in bamboo to the border. The lustre of the bamboo accentuates the rich crimson, perfectly framing the rug and adding a little touch of luxury.
Pembroke captivates the essence of William Morris’ distinctive style and will add a touch of heritage to any home.
