FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION: THE JOURNEY OF A BESPOKE CARPET

An intimate look at the journey from first concept to finished carpet

With over 30 years of experience working alongside some of the finest artisans and factories in the industry, Loomah was founded by Andrew and Natalie Cotgrove with a clear vision: to create a brand rooted in exceptional quality, original design, and a genuinely personal approach to bespoke carpets and rugs.

Every Loomah bespoke carpet and rug is custom made to order, designed to the exact specifications of each individual project. There is no set look or signature style. Instead, the focus is on creating designs that respond intuitively to the space they are made for.

THE INITIAL DESIGN CONSULTATION

The journey begins with an in-depth design consultation, where all facets of the project are explored. Careful consideration is given to the space, the architecture, and the client’s way of living, as well as the subtle cues that make an interior feel resolved rather than simply decorated. Creative inspiration, architectural context, dimensions, colour palette, materials, and texture are discussed in detail. A bespoke carpet or rug is never an isolated object; it is conceived as part of a wider narrative.

At Loomah, bespoke design is not about imposing a style. It is about creating something considered, personal, and enduring.

Some clients arrive with a fully formed concept; others simply with the desire for a bespoke carpet. In both cases, the role of the design team is the same: to listen carefully and translate those ideas into a design that will harmonise effortlessly with the interior as a whole.

While Loomah has an extensive portfolio of both contemporary and traditional designs available for customisation, it is this bespoke design service that allows something entirely unique to emerge.

CONCEPT AND ARTWORK

Once a clear direction has been established, the earliest stage of the design process begins, and it is often the quietest. Initial sketches are developed in response to scale, proportion, and movement within the room.

Motifs may reference architectural details, artworks, or natural forms, while others remain intentionally abstract. From here, initial concept artwork is developed by our in house design team.

Although technology plays an important role in the design process, many elements are still worked through by hand. Painting, drawing, and manual experimentation remain essential tools in capturing texture, movement, and nuance, qualities that are often lost when designs are developed solely on screen.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Designs are refined through collaboration and feedback. Proportion, pattern, and scale are carefully adjusted, with further developed artworks presented for approval.

Here, the design begins to take its place within the wider interior, moving closer to its final identity.

COLOUR, MATERIALS, AND SAMPLING

Once the design is approved, attention turns fully to colour, materials, and texture. The possibilities are extensive, with a wide variety of fibres, finishes, and colour palettes available.

When commissioning a bespoke carpet, sampling is highly recommended. Samples allow clients to experience materials and colours in situ, under natural light and alongside other finishes within the room. Where sampling is undertaken, a lead time of approximately five weeks allows for refinement before production begins.

FROM ARTWORK TO PRODUCTION

With final artwork approved, the design moves into production. Each Loomah bespoke carpet is expertly hand tufted by highly skilled craftsmen to exacting standards.

Hand tufting allows for exceptional control over texture, pile height, and detail, making it particularly well suited to bespoke designs. This is where creative intent meets technical precision, ensuring the finished rug reflects the integrity of the original design.

Production typically takes around 12 weeks; however, larger or more complex commissions may require additional time.

A CARPET THAT BELONGS

Once complete, the handmade rug is delivered and, if required, professionally installed.  At Loomah, bespoke design is not about imposing a style. It is about creating something considered, personal, and enduring. A bespoke rug that feels as though it has always belonged.
