INFORMATION & ADVICE: DESIGNING A BESPOKE RUG FOR YOUR DINING ROOM

At Loomah, we really do believe that the right rug has the power to completely transform a space. They can inject warmth, cosiness and personality into a room, anchoring a space and pulling a scheme together.

In a dining room, a bespoke rug can add texture, pattern and colour and provide contrast against the hard shiny surfaces prevalent in a dining room, creating a more inviting, comfortable space. Rugs can also absorb sound, which is imperative if your dining room is regularly used as an entertaining space.

Loomah have designed and supplied bespoke rugs for dining rooms of all shapes and sizes, recently collaborating with Schiller Beynon Interior Design on two very different spaces in London. We have enlisted Lisa Schilling, Interior Designer at Schiller Beynon Interior Design, to help guide you through the key considerations when designed a custom made rug for your dining room.

SIZE

Although perhaps not the most exciting part of the process, one of the most important considerations when designing a custom made rug is getting the size right.  Choosing the right size rug will make a huge difference to the look and feel of a space and the advantage of designing a bespoke rug is you can choose the exact size and shape ensuring the perfect fit.  “Sizing a rug is key,” says Lisa, “you want to allow plenty of space for dining chairs to be pulled back and enjoyed practically, whilst not overwhelming the space.”

If space allows it is recommended that you add at least 150cm to the length and width of the table to determine the rug size.

DESIGN

“The centre of the rug will likely be obscured by the tables and chairs so dining rooms lend themselves well to border designs,” advises Antonina Depczynski, Designer at Loomah Bespoke Carpets & Rugs.

Loomah recently collaborated with Schiller Beynon Interior Design to create a completely bespoke border with inspiration taken from the original ceiling moulding. “Our brief for this space was to seat sixteen; we worked hard to infuse this grand formal Mayfair dining room with a contemporary edge and warmth. The rug was key to marrying the contemporary and the traditional, bringing the room together and providing a beautiful softness to contrast some of the harder finishes,” says Lisa.

When we collaborated with Schiller Beynon to design bespoke rugs for a suburban family home, the inspiration for the dining room rug was taken from the dining room table itself. Abstract linework created a graphic design that mimicked the irregular white veins of the Nero Marquina topped table. The palette of calming blue tones evokes tranquil mood vibes creating a relaxing atmosphere for dining. “When it came to designing the dining room rug, we spent a long time mulling over and selecting tufts that worked well with the room scheme,” says Lisa. “Keeping the colour palette minimal gave us the look that we wanted – the rug gave us the perfect cool contemporary colour tones that we needed against the warmth of the wood flooring.”

MATERIAL

“When selecting a material for a dining room rug we always recommend our pure New Zealand Wool,” adds Antonina. A completely natural and resilient fibre, wool’s unique properties offer unsurpassed benefits, making it an ideal flooring choice for almost every space. Wool will not only improve the acoustics of the space, but also offers the most durability without compromising on luxury so is ideal for use in a dining room setting where spillages are inevitable.

“Whilst rugs are often a huge investment they never fail to transform a room with warmth, subtle colour and design detail, adds Lisa, “and for us they usually form the very glue that pulls our interior schemes together.”
