INFORMATION & ADVICE: DESIGNING A BESPOKE RUG FOR YOUR LIVING ROOM

There are very few things that can make a home feel warm and cosy in quite the way that a bespoke rug or carpet can. This is especially important in a living room where a bespoke rug will an extra layer of comfort and texture, softening the space and creating a welcoming atmosphere.

There are no rules when it comes to designing a bespoke rug for your living room.

If your living space is open plan, bespoke rugs are ideal to zone a space, for example differentiating between a living and dining area.

No matter the size or scope of a project, Loomah offer a complete bespoke design service with a distinct focus on a unique and personal customer experience. Everything is designed by our in-house design team in our London showroom and expertly hand tufted to the most exacting standards by highly skilled craftsmen.

With over 30 years’ experience in the industry, we have enlisted Andrew Cotgrove, Founder and Managing Director of Loomah Bespoke Carpets & Rugs, to help guide you through the key considerations when designed a custom made rug for your living room.

SIZE

Choosing the right size for your hand tufted rug can make huge difference to the overall look and feel of your living room.

“Try to avoid a rug that is too small as this will make a small space feel smaller and disorderly, says Andrew.  “A larger rug will anchor a smaller space, pulling everything together.”  Ideally, a rug would be large enough that all furniture can sit comfortably within its perimeter. This is especially important in an open living space as it helps create a zone for the seating arrangements. The advantage of designing a bespoke rug is you can choose the exact size and shape to ensure everything fits perfectly.

When designing a living room, the ideal rug size is one that is generous enough to comfortably accommodate all furniture. This will pull the room together resulting in a more cohesive space.  If this is not possible, for example, when furniture is pressed against a wall, design a bespoke rug that is large enough that it sits neatly underneath the front legs of the sofa and any additional chairs, rather than stopping short. This will give the illusion that your handmade rug is bigger that it is and consequently, makes the space look and feel bigger too.

MATERIAL

The function of your living room will determine the best material choice. Family rooms and more open plan living spaces that are subjected to higher footfall will require a more durable yarn. However, if you are designing a rug for a snug, practicality may not need to be the main consideration and you may wish to consider a more delicate material to evoke feelings of warmth and luxury.

Versatile and durable, wool is by the far the most popular material used when commissioning a bespoke carpet or rug. A completely natural and resilient fibre, wool’s unique properties offer unsurpassed benefits, making it an ideal flooring choice for almost every space.

Another increasingly popular option is Tencel, a cellulose fibre favoured for its natural shine and durability. Tencel is fast becoming one of the more popular choices for custom made carpets and rugs in part because of its environmentally friendly properties.  Acclaimed for its lustre and softness, Tencel feels wonderfully soft underfoot making ideal for spaces where you can relax your feet into it and appreciate the comfort it provides. Luxurious, comfortable, and forgiving, the durability of Tencel makes it an extremely versatile and suitable for use in endless spaces.

Our unique blend of wool and silk remains a popular choice for living rooms. Combining the lustre of silk with the durability of wool, this luxurious blend provides an ideal solution for those that require an element of practicality but don’t want to compromise on luxury.

For the seating area, Noor choose Gefion, an abstract pattern in a soft palette of neutrals. Custom made to order, this hand tufted rug is large enough for the bespoke sofas and stunning bespoke liquid metal table to all fit comfortably on it, whilst still showcasing the detail in the design.  “When in-situ you will never see the whole rug on its own, you’ll see the pattern weaving through the furniture,” adds Noor, “and that is why we have an organic pattern so no matter where you look down you’ll always see a part of the design.”

The dining area features a second bespoke rug under the dining table. For this handmade rug, Noor chose Sif, a subtle crackle design in a cut-loop texture. Although the design differs from that in the seating area, Noor utilised the same material and a soft neutral colour palette for the hand tufted rug.  This helps zone and differentiate the two areas while maintaining a cohesive feeling for the overall space.

Both rugs have been crafted using Tencel. Offering a wonderful alternative to silk and viscose, Tencel has a beautiful lustre to rival silk but with increased durability.  “Tencel has a beautiful fluidity so is well suited to abstract designs,” adds Abigail Avery, Designer at Loomah Bespoke Carpets and Rugs.  “The durability of Tencel makes it an extremely versatile and suitable for use in endless spaces.”
