With over 30 years’ experience in the industry, we have enlisted Andrew Cotgrove, Founder and Managing Director of Loomah Bespoke Carpets & Rugs, to help guide you through the key considerations when designed a custom made rug for your bedroom.

SIZE

“Whilst sizing is somewhat objective, choosing the right size hand tufted rug will make a huge difference to the look and feel of a space, explains Andrew. “The advantage of designing a bespoke rug is you can choose the exact size and shape ensuring the perfect fit.”

If space allows, you want to position a rug so it is completely under the bed and bedside tables. Using the bedside tables as a guide, frame the bed with equal widths on each side and at the end of the bed. This provides a more uniform and balanced look.

Alternatively, you can position the rug in front of the bedside tables, again, keeping an equal width around the bed. If choosing this option ensure the rug is as close as possible to the front of the bedside tables for maximum comfort when getting in and out of bed.

DESIGN

There are no rules when it comes to designing a bespoke rug for your bedroom. Whether you want inject colour and pattern into your scheme or evoke relaxation with a more subtle design, Loomah’s design team are on hand to guide you through the process of designing a bespoke rug for your space.

“Whilst we are not ones to shy away from bold patterns and vivacious colours, bedrooms are well suited to more understated rug designs in neutral palettes to elicit the sense of calm we all crave,” says Andrew.

Subtle tone on tone patterns and uncomplicated geometrics are popular as they don’t overwhelm a space. Incorporating texture, for example, juxtaposing cut pile with loop pile, or employing variations in pile height and materials, creates contrast and adds interest, elevating the overall design.

MATERIAL

Bedroom rugs are subjected to a lot less wear than other areas of the home so practicality doesn’t have to be the main consideration. “This is an area where you can consider more delicate materials and sumptuous textures to add feelings of warmth and luxury,” explains Andrew. “Choose a material that you can really sink your feet into when you climb out of bed in the morning.”

Silk is the ultimate luxury fibre in terms of elegance and quality. Displaying the most luxurious sheen and sumptuous texture, silk has a magical effect when used to craft handmade rugs. It is a popular choice for bedroom suites, where you can really enjoy that soft, sumptuous feeling between your toes.

Alternatively our unique blend of wool and silk, combines the lustre and softness of silk with the durability of wool. It displays a subtle sheen and feels wonderfully soft underfoot. The addition of wool strengthens the overall composition making this an idea option if practicality is a concern.

Offering an affordable alternative to silk, Bamboo is becoming an increasingly popular choice for our customers when commissioning a bespoke rug.  It has an innate lustre to rival silk and feels extremely soft and luxurious to touch.

Versatile and durable, wool is by far the most popular material used when commissioning a bespoke carpet or rug. A completely natural and resilient fibre, wool’s unique properties offer unsurpassed benefits, making it an ideal flooring choice for almost every space.  It has outstanding insulation properties providing comfort and warmth making it prefect for bedroom rugs.

CASE STUDY

We recently worked with one of Britain’s leading luxury interior design practices, Callender Howorth, delivering eight hand tufted rugs for a contemporary country house in Buckinghamshire. “The brief from the client was to create a sublime and luxurious home that has energy, elegance and a sense of fun,” says Mark Howorth, Managing Director of Callender Howorth.

After approaching us with concept images and mood boards for each space, we arranged a meeting with Callender Howorth at their London studio to refine the designs and select the colours and specification for each bespoke rug.  “Our client wanted the house to have a real sense of fun and energy,” adds Mark. “So we chose a heady mix of colour, pattern, texture and electricity.”

The clients love of bold graphic design transpires to the master bedroom bespoke rug, where an oversized geometric pattern was selected. The single coloured design was created by employing two different pile heights, producing a three-dimensional quality which is further emphasised by the single colour. Handmade in our unique blend of wool and silk, which feels wonderfully soft underfoot, makes an ideal choice for the master bedroom suite where one can really induce in the sumptuous pile.

The result is a discerning design with a slight lustre, adding a luxurious quality to this cool, calm and collected space. The graphic pattern, neutral colour palette of steely greys and playful use of material and texture prove that you don’t need a riot of colour to create a fun and energetic space. “It was all about the details on this project allowing us to create an absolutely bespoke and refined home,” says Mark.
