Ilinka design approached Loomah to design a bespoke handmade rug for the living room of a stunning family home in the heart of London’s Belgravia.

The listed building had been restored to its former glory by architects Paul Davis and Partners who reinstated many of the original features. Now the owners were looking to Ilinka Lukic, London-based designer and founder of Ilinka Design, to create a more personal space that would that would adapt to their daily needs of family life.

With a degree in art history, Ilinka combines her expertise in art and furnishings with an eye for beauty and detail.  “Our projects reflect our belief in timeless design and love for art, architecture and all the different components that contribute to create and produce the best solution for a specific space,” says Ilinka.

“My objective was to establish a link between the heritage elements of the building’s architecture with the details of its interior, such as the panels, the mouldings, the high ceilings and the glorious spaces, accommodating all this with the contemporary taste of my client and adjusting it to your needs. To do this, I searched a large number of galleries until I found the right objects,” adds Ilinka.  “We also have the difficulty that, as these are large rooms, most of the pieces of furniture had to be made to measure, as it was the only way to ensure that they had the appropriate scale”.

One of the benefits of designing a custom made rug is you can specify the exact size required for your space, and are not restricted by standard rug sizes. “All our carpets and rugs are made to the exact size and specification of each client,” adds Andrew Cotgrove, Founder and Managing Director at Loomah Bespoke Carpets & Rugs.

Ilinka approached Loomah to design and supply a custom made rug for the living room. The space would feature new and existing pieces from the client’s art collection. Contemporary furnishings would sit against the restored period features, without compromising on the properties history.

Gradient rugs can be beautifully displayed in both modern and traditional residences due to their versatility and visual appeal. The gradual blending from one colour to another creates an effortless design that was well suited to Ilinka’s design brief.

When opting for a more neutral rug, choosing a rich texture will add another dimension to the space

A deep shade of inky blue gently fades to a pale grey centre creating a subtle gradation of colour.  This moody colour palette echoes those of the stunning artwork.  “A gradation of colour can provide the perfect way to add interest to your bespoke rug without introducing additional colours into your scheme,” says Antonina Depczynski, Designer at Loomah Bespoke Carpets & Rugs.

“When opting for a more neutral rug, choosing a rich texture will add another dimension to the space,” adds Antonina.   The living room rug has been expertly hand tufted from bamboo.  Classed as a renewable, eco-friendly and sustainable material, bamboo is becoming an increasingly popular choice for our customrs when commissioning a bespoke carpet or rug.  Offering an affordable alternative to silk whilst remaining similar in appearance, bamboo has an innate lustre and feels luxuriously soft to touch. The delicate nature of bamboo means it is best suited to areas of light domestic use such as living rooms, bedrooms and dressing rooms.

“Bamboo is a lovely material to work with”, says Antonina, designer at Loomah. “The high sheen and natural lustre of bamboo adds a fluidity to designs, lending itself beautifully to creating gradations in colour”.

Wonderfully soft underfoot, the use of bamboo reflects the light, enhancing its innate lustre and accentuating the gentle colour change.  Sumptuous and inviting, the finish is one of understated luxury that unifies the space.
