Rebecca Hughes, Creative Director of Rebecca Hughes Interiors approached Loomah to design and supply bespoke carpets for the reception areas and staircase of an exclusive luxury apartment building in Grosvenor Square. Nestled in the heart of London’s Mayfair, Grosvenor Square has been one of London’s most famed addresses for centuries with several notable members of the aristocracy amongst its past residents. It is currently in the midst of a dramatic transformation with a number of iconic buildings including the former US Embassy undergoing renovation.
“Our brief was to create a fresh interpretation of the buildings neo classical fundamentals.”
Rebecca was approached by the board of the apartment building to transform the communal areas, brightening the existing space with a more contemporary scheme whilst still maintaining its grandeur. “Our brief was to create a fresh interpretation of the buildings neo classical fundamentals and to ensure that the building really was better than the best – a luxury condominium space” says Rebecca.
When Rebecca approached Loomah the scheme for the space had already been designed and the fabrics and finishes had been selected. The carpet was the final element to be considered but a key component in achieving the desired finish. The brief for Loomah was to design and supply a bespoke carpet that would not only bring the whole space together but would bridge the gap between the contemporary and traditional elements. “The interior scheme is built upon a base of neutral tones laced with embroideries, accent trimmings & delicate simple patterns that highlight the stand out architecturally timeless features, “ adds Rebecca.
With over 50 years of experience Loomah have developed an extensive archive of both traditional and modern designs but our provenance was the design and supply of more classical carpets and rugs. Natalie Cotgrove, Designer and Co-founder of Loomah Bespoke Carpet & Rugs studied Carpet Design at Kidderminster University and now specialises in traditional carpets, working on bespoke designs for homes and hotels across the world for over 25 years. “I take most of my inspiration from the architecture in London and Paris,” says Natalie. “We often incorporate classical motifs taken from architectural detailing such as ceiling roses, cornices and fire surrounds into our rug designs.” So when the Loomah team visited site they looked for initial inspiration in the existing architectural mouldings and design details that were being lovingly restored by Rebecca. “We used this as a base for proposing different ideas for each design element which we eventually pulled together to create full design concepts,” says Abigail Avery, Designer at Loomah Bespoke Carpets & Rugs.
“The design has incorporated the neutral tones displayed integrally throughout.”
The final design featured a border taken from Pembroke, a traditional rug inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement that was on display in our London showroom at the time. An ornate trellis provides a subtle nod the original carpet design, remaining sensitive to the history of the building. The inclusion of a delicate floral motif complemented the painted wall murals perfectly. “The design has incorporated the neutral tones displayed integrally throughout,” adds Rebecca. A modern, pared back colour palette of sophisticated neutrals results in a cohesive scheme that perfectly balances both the modern and traditional elements of the space and achieves the bright, elegant finish desired by the residents.
Once the design had been finalised the carpet was custom made in pure wool with a smooth cut pile finish. Versatile and durable, wool is a completely natural fibre with unique properties that offer unparalleled benefits, including thermal and flame retardant properties as well as being renewable, biodegradable. Wool is unsurpassed when offering durability without compromising on luxury. It is the most hardwearing yarn available. Its natural strength and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic make it ideal for the use in communal areas such as the reception, corridors and staircase of this luxury residence.
“The bespoke carpet by Loomah has been curated impressively as one whole piece, laid throughout the entire communal area,” adds Rebecca. “The key to the success of a project of this nature is the planning,” says Andrew, Managing Director and Co-founder of Loomah Bespoke Carpet & Rugs. Each carpet was inset into marble so our expert installation team worked in partnership with the marble flooring specialists to achieve the perfect fit. Working off plans they plotted the borders to ensure they would flow seamlessly around the contours of the room. The central trellis motif then continued up the stair runner creating a continuous flow through the space.
“The key to the success of a project of this nature is then planning”
“This is the beauty of commissioning a bespoke carpet”, adds Andrew. “The key to the success of a project of this nature is then planning. By investing time in the planning we not only ensure the perfect finish but are able to minimise waste. This means less cost both financially and to the environment.”
