LUXURY BESPOKE CARPETS & RUGS
At Loomah luxury is not about expense, it is about creating something carefully designed and beautifully crafted. Our design service allows our customers to create something truly unique to their space. “When a customer approaches us to commission a bespoke carpet or rug they are making an investment,” says, Andrew. “Loomah’s strength has always been our design integrity and originality with a focus on creating bespoke designs tailored to the client’s individual specifications.”
We feel it is important to ensure our customers appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that not only go into the manufacture of our products but also the design process. This year at Decorex we are launching 4 new designs that celebrate the provenance of our craft and the skill in design that helped to establish Loomah.
THE PROVENANCE OF OUR CRAFT
Whilst technology is fundamental to our practice, so many aspects of the design process are still done by hand. In Loomah’s infancy the designs for all our hand tufted carpets and rugs were hand drawn and hand painted, it is only in the last 15 years that all our artwork has moved across to computer design programs.
However, there are still projects where the skill of hand drawing and painting are imperative in fulfilling the design brief, especially when designing traditional carpets and rugs. “There is something really beautiful about hand painted artwork that does not translate fully to computer generated ones,” adds Natalie Cotgrove, Designer and Co-Founder of Loomah, “hand drawing ensures accuracy and that the none of the intricate detailing is lost in the finished handmade carpet.”
THE DESIGNS
Natalie specialises in designing traditional carpets and rugs. After gaining her degree in Carpet Design, Natalie honed her craft and developed her love for traditional design whilst working under designer Robert Holmes. “His expertise in scroll work and floral designs were second to none,” says Natalie, “I learnt so much from watching how he used design and colour.”
Natalie has designed traditional carpets and rugs for homes and hotels across the world for over 25 years. “I take most of inspiration my inspiration from the architecture in London and Paris,” adds Natalie, “I’ve collected a library of photos over the years taken whilst wandering the city streets that I always return to.”
Decorex 2024 will see Loomah debut four new traditional designs. The designs were initially based on some black and white plates originally used tapestries that Natalie had in her design archive. In celebration of our provenance, Natalie revisited her roots and decided to forego technology and hand draw and paint each design.
Each design was then sent to an old colleague of ours, Gordon, who produced full sized details of each design. These were sent out to our factory who used them to trace the design onto the canvas to ensure that no detail was lost “We wanted to show the fine detail that we can achieve and traditional designs are the best way to showcase this. They are more complex and show our capability to design,” adds Natalie.
“A beautifully crafted traditional rug never goes out of style and can be surprisingly versatile in all types of interiors,” adds Natalie. Traditional rugs are no longer confined to traditional interiors and juxtaposing a more classically designed rug with more contemporary furnishings can create the perfect blend of old and new. “This works particularly well in period homes that have been modernised for 21st century living, providing a connection to the heritage of the building.”
