Loomah’s Ravaged Beauty Collection features a selection of stunning abstract hand tufted rug designs inspired by the subtle impact that nature can have on our surroundings over time.
A trip to Instow, North Devon, watching the tide rise and fall revealed beauty in one of the most unexpected of places. As the tide went out, the boats moored on the river became marooned on large expanses of sand, exposing the hulls and a rich array of patterns, colours and textures.
Each design in this collection is an interpretation of a different form of deterioration created by constant exposure to one of nature’s most revered forces, the sea. “The beauty of our subject matter is it is always evolving, developing new patterns and taking on new forms,” says Andrew Cotgrove, Founder and Managing Director of Loomah.

The trend for abstract rugs has become increasingly popular in recent years and shows no signs of waning. Whether a more subtle painterly effect or bolder statement, abstract rugs add impact to any space. “Achieving the desired appearance is a complex process,” adds Andrew, “one that often involves the intricate blending of colours, materials and textures.”
Working alongside our factory, Loomah’s design team have perfected the art of translating abstract patterns into cutting edge hand tufted rug designs.
Vessel is a graphic interpretation of the abstract patterns formed on the hull of a fishing boat by layers of flaking paint.
Hand tufted from pure New Zealand semi-worsted wool in a smooth cut pile finish, the colour palette of cool blues and contrasting neutral shades is evocative of the sea and sand, where our inspiration was unearthed. The subtle contour of the boat has been translated into the finished design creating a sense of movement across the rug.

Our semi-worsted wool is slightly finer than our standard wool. This allows for increased definition in highly detailed or complex designs and thus lends itself perfectly to abstract designs where attention to detail is key. The smooth cut pile finish feels wonderfully soft under foot whilst providing the durability one associates with a wool carpet.
Interior Stylist Lucy Gough suggests pairing Vessel with monochromatic furniture. “The organic shapes threaded throughout this rug give a contemporary feel to the design,” says Lucy. “Monochromatic furniture allows this rug to be centre stage, though adding a touch of colour with cushions and soft furnishings would help to make the space feel cohesive and tie it all together.”
