Le Dumont d’Urville is the fourth ship in the Ponant Explorer series, named after the French explorer and naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d’Urville.

After the more understated bespoke carpet design developed in collaboration with Studio Jean Philippe for Le Bougainville, for Le Dumont d’Urville we returned to the concepts we explored for Le Champlain.  Initially, the client was keen to design a completely bespoke hand tufted rug but after careful consideration we found the design for Le Champlain worked perfectly with the scheme for Le Dumont d’Urville.  The revised brief was to revitalise the existing design through colour changes and incorporate more texture.

“I have always been fascinated by Josef Albers’ theory of colour, how colour is perceived and changes in relation to what surrounds it, so we explored this idea through the concept of revising the colour palette to suit the new interiors scheme,” explains Antonina, designer at Loomah. “It still amazes me how altering colours in an existing design can completely transform the way a design appears.”

Studio Jean-Phillipe favoured the combination of strong solid colours with sharp contrasts. There is a purposeful contrast between the bright cream tone of the abstract graphic lines and the darker colours of the background, where maroons, steely greys and black are stippled together. Employing stippling techniques created an intricate blend of colours, resulting in a painterly appearance that added fluidity to the finished design.

Making extensive use of cut and loop piles, stippled colours and varying pile heights, the bespoke carpet possesses a crafted and organic quality in keeping with the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape and contributes to the overall feeling of understated luxury that embodies Ponant’s unique cruise experience.

Once the design was finalised and the sample approved, highly skilled craftsman at our Thailand factory hand-tufted the carpet in pure New Zealand wool. Our New Zealand wool is certified by the IMO-International Code for Application of Fire Test Procedure, 2010, meaning it is suitable for use on all marine vessels.  As well as conforming to fire safety standards, New Zealand wool also offers increased durability without compromising on luxury; so is ideal for handmade carpets installed on luxury cruise ships, yachts and superyachts.

One of the advantages of hand tufted carpets is that they are made to order in the exact size and shape required. For all the ships in the Ponant fleet, we were able to design a completely unique shape with smooth curved edges, perfectly mirroring the contours of the built-in seating anchored in the centre of the finished carpet.
