PROJECT FOCUS: LUXURY EXPEDITION CRUISE SHIPS LE BOUGAINVILLE

PROJECT FOCUS: LUXURY EXPEDITION CRUISE SHIPS LE BOUGAINVILLE

Le Bougainville, named after the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, is the third ship in the Ponant Explorer series.

Unlike the final hand tufted carpet design developed for Le Champlain, the design for Le Bourganville moves away from the Aztec influences, instead looking to the sea and sky for inspiration. A seemingly abstract placement of lines was realised when considering the lines of the convoluted nautilus shell.  Each individual line mimics the pattern on the shell, while collectively, forming a sunburst-like pattern. The natural form of each shape is emulated in the surrounding screen, providing a continuity of design throughout the space.

As with Le Champlain, Studio Jean Phillipe were keen to maintain an organic feel to the overall design. We therefore worked by hand to create the sunburst motifs, which were hand drawn by our designer onto paper before being scanned into the computer. In an effort to further retain the freehand nature of the edges, minimal retouching was done on the computer.

The muted colour palette of soft, sandy neutrals is punctuated by bursts of golden yellow, evocative of the exotic locations set to be explored. Employing stippling techniques for colour results in a painterly effect that gives a feeling of fluidity, reminiscent of the sea, to the finished carpet design.  We also incorporated texture into this design by combining both cut and loop pile, with some areas of raised pile. The loop pile was tip sheared, a finishing technique whereby a percentage of the pile is randomly sheared by hand.

Once the design was finalised and the sample approved, the bespoke carpet was hand tufted by highly skilled craftsman at our Thailand factory in pure New Zealand wool. Our New Zealand wool is certified by the IMO-International Code for Application of Fire Test Procedure, 2010, meaning it is suitable for use on all marine vessels.  As well as conforming to fire safety standards, New Zealand wool also offers increased durability without compromising on luxury, so is ideal for handmade carpets installed on luxury cruise ships, yachts and superyachts.

One of the advantages of hand tufted carpets and rugs is that they are made to order in the exact size and shape required. For all the ships in the Ponant fleet, we were able to design a completely unique shape with smooth curved edges, perfectly mirroring the contours of the built-in seating anchored in the centre of the finished carpet.

With the use of natural materials and complimentary neutral tones, the overall look remains contemporary whilst providing a sense of calm amongst the adventure. The result is an inviting, relaxing space that is both luxurious and comfortable and successfully embodies Ponant’s philosophy of creating a feeling of ‘casual luxury’ onboard their cruises.
