Designed by renowned Dutch architecture practice UN Studio, Canaletto is a new architectural landmark located in the heart of one of London’s most dynamic neighbourhoods and right on the doorstep of Tech City. Lying adjacent to Regents Canal, this streamlined high rise comprises of 31 stories of apartments, offering expansive views over London.
London based, luxury interior design practice, Goddard Littlefair designed and styled two apartments in the building’s signature Beaumont Collection. A limited-edition collection of elegant three-bedroom modern sanctuaries located at the top of the building.
The client brief was to create a comfortable and welcoming living space
Nestled on the 24th to 28th floors, each Beaumont Collection apartment includes close to 2000 square feet of living space, three double bedrooms with two en-suite bathrooms and further bathroom and powder room, a study and spacious open plan kitchen and lounge area with dual aspect panoramas enjoyed through floor-to-ceiling seamless glass.
“The client brief was to create a comfortable and welcoming living space, with a sense of style and luxury expected from such distinctive building and high-level London living,” says Co-Founder and Director Jo Littlefair.
Goddard Littlefair wanted to soften the exterior’s rigorous expanses of glass and metal. “The views are breath-taking, and it was important to maximize sightlines to the paranormal of the skyline,” continues Jo. “However, glass can give off a slightly cold feel. We countered [its] hard materiality with curved furniture and used tactile materials to create a serene environment.”
Loomah were approached by Goddard Littlefair to supply bespoke rugs for the living spaces in both apartments. Each rug was custom made to the exact size and shape required. A soft palette of warm greys was used throughout, creating a consistent thread that ties each space together. “The softened interior styling incorporates natural materials and a natural base palette to provide a minimalist, sophisticated look,” adds Jo.
Goodard Littlefair’s design approach is to always work from the inside out. In the case of this apartment the curvaceous facade of Canaletto’s striking architecture is thoughtfully reflected in the soft lines of interior details.
Layers of personality are added using a mix of materials from light wood, marble and ceramics to demure metallics, reflecting the design of the building’s façade.
The snug features a bespoke rug made from a beautiful synthetic silk in a smooth cut pile finish. The rug has been hand bound with a leather border in a complementary colour. “The snug room is defined by its soft curves and detailing, which together speak to the buildings distinctive form, fluidly connecting the transition from outside to inside,” says Jo.
The use of synthetic silk adds a touch of luxury and warmth to the space, balancing the floor to ceiling glass to create a cosy, inviting space. “Whilst silk remains one of the most luxurious materials available in manufacture of bespoke carpets and rugs, its application can be limiting due to delicate nature of the fibre,” says Andrew Cotgrove, Founder and Managing Director of Loomah. Synthetic silk is a lovely alternative to silk when practicality is paramount but you still want to sink your feet into something wonderfully soft with a beautiful lustre. It is hardwearing and can be installed in both residential and commercial settings as wall to wall fitted carpet or loose laid rugs.
For the master bedroom Loomah supplied a bespoke rug made from pure New Zealand wool in a loop pile finish and hand bound with a leather border in a complementary colour. “Versatile and durable, wool is by the far the most popular material used when commissioning a bespoke carpet or rug,” says Andrew. A completely natural and resilient fibre, wool’s unique properties offer unsurpassed benefits, making it an ideal flooring choice for almost every space. It has outstanding insulation properties providing comfort and warmth making it prefect for use in this master bedroom.
The use of loop pile adds texture, contrasting beautifully with the wood floor. “Layers of personality are added using a mix of materials from light wood, marble and ceramics to demure metallics, reflecting the design of the building’s façade,” adds Jo.
The study features a bespoke rug made from pure new Zealand wool. The edge has been hand bound in a contrasting black leather border that complements the use of the darker, more masculine pieces that furnish the space.
In October 2020, Goddard Littlefair won the Best Interior Design in the Development category of The Sunday Times British Homes Awards for Canaletto. “We are absolutely delighted to win the British Homes Award for Best Interior Design for the Development at Canaletto. It highlights the success of our ethos of creating something unique for every project while maintaining an authentic, personal identity” – Jo Littlefair, Co-Founder and Director of Goddard Littlefair.
