PROJECT FOCUS: SUBURBAN FAMILY HOME

Following the successful installation of a custom made stair runner and two beautiful bespoke hand tufted rugs for a stunning grade II listed property in Mayfair, we were thrilled when Schiller Beynon Interior Design appointed us to work with them on their most recent project. “We pride ourselves on providing the highest level of customer service from the initial design meeting through to final installation,” says Andrew Cotgrove, Managing Director at Loomah. “It is always a testimony to how well a project has run when a customer comes back.”

“Our aim was to create the impression of understated luxury”

Schiller Beynon’s ethos is to introduce practical playful design and details that reflect an individual client’s personality. This is evident in our latest collaboration where we were commissioned to design two bespoke rugs for a family property in the leafy suburb of Hampstead.

The overall feel of the property is classic in approach with contemporary flourishes, combining bold statement pieces and traditional aesthetics to create an exceptional living space. “Our aim was to create the impression of understated luxury – a look that is often hard to achieve but all the more rewarding at completion,” says Lisa Schiller, Designer at Schiller Beynon. “With a trusting client willing to hand over a blank canvas, our design team took the decision to restore an exquisite existing marble entrance hallway floor, which in turn then provided our colour palette. The monochrome and dark green marble stones were used to influence the rooms beyond, enabling us to weave classic design and detailing with more contemporary finishes to create some wow spaces with timeless elegance.”

“We used the drawing room rug as a means of drawing subtle colour into the room”

“The drawing room undertook an unimaginably huge transformation”, continues Lisa. “We stripped to a shell adding a new fireplace, new flooring and joinery. The statement bespoke sofa creates contemporary seating, with the statement chairs thrown into boot.”

“We used the drawing room rug as a means of drawing subtle colour into the room lifting the monochrome theme that ran throughout the walls, joinery and window treatments,” adds Kim Beynon, Designer at Schiller Beynon.

Hand tufted from pure New Zealand wool in a smooth cut pile finish, the bespoke rug features hand drawn lines that together form an abstract pattern that reflects the playful use of angles throughout the room. “We opted for a bold ochre velvet for a large bespoke designed angled sofa and then reflected this colour and played on it’s shape within the rug design itself,” says Lisa. “It worked beautifully, creating just enough interest on the floor to add interest yet not entirely distract the eye. We played further on the angles and shapes within the rug pattern, with our choices of furniture and other objects, making the drawing room one of our favourite spaces in the house.”

“Whilst rugs are often a huge investment they never fail to transform a room”

Subtle sections of eglomise mirror, textured wallpaper, and bespoke panelling all feature in the stunning dining room. Abstract linework creates a graphic design for the bespoke rug that mimics the irregular white veins of the Nero Marquina topped table and angled frames of the luxury Emmanuel Gallina for Porada chairs that it sits beneath. The palette of calming blue tones is repeated throughout the property evoking tranquil mood vibes.

“When it came to designing the dining room rug, we spent a long time mulling over and selecting tufts that worked well with the room scheme,” says Lisa. “Keeping the colour palette minimal gave us the look that we wanted – the rug gave us the perfect cool contemporary colour tones that we needed against the warmth of the wood flooring.”

The custom designed rug was handmade using pure New Zealand wool with contrasting design details in silk. Wool offers the most durability without compromising on luxury so is ideal for using in a dining room setting where spillages are inevitable. The use of silk adds a subtle lustre that both highlights the design and softens the graphic lines that may have otherwise felt too sharp.

“Whilst rugs are often a huge investment they never fail to transform a room with warmth, subtle colour and design detail, adds Lisa, “and for us they usually form the very glue that pulls our interior schemes together.”
